Gardening Committee
Our Junior Infant, Senior Infant and First Class pupils enjoyed planting their own wildflower garden in Maina Park. We were privileged that Paul from Kilrush Tidy Towns invited us to participate in this initiative.
Each child planted their own seed bomb and hopefully there will be lots of wild flowers growing for years to come. This experience enabled the children to develop their Numeracy, Literacy , SESE and SPHE skills. It was a beautiful day which enhanced the children's experience.
One Tree Per Child’ wants to have every child planting one tree as part of a primary school activity. '
‘One Tree Per Child’ is an international tree planting initiative. It was started by Olivia Newton-John and Jon Dee, the original founders of National Tree Day, in June 2015
Kilrush is first town to introduce the One Tree Per Child project in Ireland. Each child is given the opportunity to plant a tree during their time in primary school. In 2017, 376 trees were planted by all children attending primary school in Kilrush and in 2018, 66 trees were planted by new pupils.
This is the 3rd year of this event and 50+ native trees were planted by all children who were newly enrolled in in September 2019. As the children grow their trees will grow with them.
Early March was chosen as the planting date as it is the recommended time to plant trees.
In association with Kilrush Tidy towns our school is involved in a very exciting project called One Tree Per Child Kilrush. Kilrush Tidy Towns have planted 480 trees, this will create a new woodland area around the Gallery Park Sports Grounds. Each child in our school was presented with a gift of a tree. Thursday morning the 6th April began with great excitement when each child in our school went to find their tree. The children will be able o watch their tree grow year after year.

Green-Schools, is an international environmental education programme, environmental management system and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole school action for the environment.
One of the key success factors of the Green-Schools programme is that it is a themed programme. That is, schools undertaking the programme work through the seven steps one theme at a time. The themes in sequence are:
1. Litter & Waste
2. Energy
3. Water
4. Travel
5. Biodiversity
6. Global Citizenship - Litter & Waste
7. Global Citizenship - Energy
This year our school will continue work on the Water theme. The aim of the Water theme is to support schools in introducing and implementing a sustainable water programme and raising awareness of and engagement in related issues.
Our school will also continue our work with Kilrush Tidy Towns; we would like to congratulate them on the wonderful results in the Entente Florale Competition and the gold medal in the Tidy Towns Competition.
