What are Creative Arts Therapies ?
Creative arts therapies is a collective term used for art therapy, dance-movement therapy, dramatherapy and music therapy. They are evidenced-based mental health professions with a strong research foundation. They work with a focus on psychosocial, cognitive, emotional and physical needs and utilise creative mediums that allow an alternative and additional means of communication.
Art Therapy
Art therapy is an allied mental health profession IACAT ( Irish Association of Creative Arts Therapists) -accredited art therapists use art media and creative interventions to encourage self-expression and reflection within a therapeutic relationship. The aim is to improve mental health and maintain emotional well-being.
An Art Therapy Session
In an art therapy session, the art therapist provides various art media such as paint, clay, collage and other materials to help the person to express and explore their emotions, develop insight and make sense of difficult life experiences. The art therapist holds a safe, confidential setting, and works in a non-judgemental way. Art therapy sessions are generally non-directive and person-led, though therapists may offer themes or directives. It can take place in an individual or a group context. The therapist works with the student to explore their images to reach their own personal understanding and insight. Based on the age and needs of the student, a session usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the attention span and focus of the student.
Music Therapy
Music therapy is an evidence-based profession where the planned and creative use of music-based interventions by an IACAT-accredited music therapist supports people to improve, restore or maintain health, functioning and well-being.
